My husband and I are traveling to Ecuador for almost 6 weeks this summer to check it out for retirement. We will be landing in Quito, where we will have a hotel reservation and take a couple of days to rest and get used to the altitude, if necessary. Then to Otavalo. My question is: do we need to make reservations at hotels, hostels, etc? We want to see the beach, Cuenca, Spanish language school (our Spanish is “mas o menos”). We were thinking of being kind of free to stay longer at some places, if we liked it. When looking at hotels in Otavalo, however, some of the websites say there are only 2 rooms left for a Fri – Sun stay, to take in the markets. Please advise.
    Thank you, Kim

    • Hello Kim, it is a great idea that you have decided to check out different places in Ecuador. About hotel reservations, I will say that a reservation is a must unless you don´t mind using your time to search for local hotels when you arrive to a location. In Ecuador, you can make reservations online (if the hotel or hostel has a website) or by phone without getting charge, they do not request credit card numbers. The only time that you must payed in advance is when there is a local holiday since must places are busy with local travelers. Also always make sure that you do not provide your card information online or by phone unless it is a secured site or a well known hotel that is requesting it.
If your choice is to search for options once you arrive to a location, I will provide you with few hints:
For larger cities, like Quito and Guayaquil, you better have a reservation since it is not so easy to move around due to traffic and distance. Cuenca it is smaller, you could get around downtown and Calle Larga by foot, and search for a nice place to stay and get better rates, just remember to watch out for local holidays. Otavalo and the rest of the towns on the highland are really small places, so you better make sure you get hotel references by trusted websites or international travelers, you might walk in to something that it is offered as a great clean place, but you end up with something completely different to our standards.
By the coast, you have towns like Bahia de Caraquez, Manta, Ballenita, Salinas and the surfer Montañita which advertise a lot on the web, they show images of the place and even customers opinions, that will help a lot. Your options along the coastline are a lot better, there you could travel along the cost and find some local rustic hotels with great service. There is a lot of tourism promotion by the local government, so they are providing better services at the present moment.
Tripadvisor.com is a great site to check for travelers opinions about different locations in Ecuador. You could always request any insight info or opinion about a location or place directly to my mail lina.landivar.carreno@gmail.com
If you get a chance to stop by in Guayaquil let me know, we have an expat group meeting every month that you could attend just to get better informed about living in this country…
I hope this information helps you out…
